Our Well Process

We are on a mission.  Water Access Now (WAN) partners with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), for deep water boreholes in villages in Ghana in 2026.

This miracle of clean, available, close water will change lives and bring hope!

In boreholes over 5 years of age, we have an 86.6% long-term sustainability rate.  (This is in contrast to the average of 40% in Africa.)

The approximate process for installation of a well is....

1.     Ghana Health Services (GHS) affirms CRS investment in villages.

2.     Villages are notified they can apply for clean water.

3.     Villages are solely responsible to complete & return their application.

** CRS has far more applications than possible to finance in a given year.  The choice is made according to population size, level of need, and distance now walked to fetch water.

4.    CRS staff visits chosen sites to explain the process and lead the community in electing a leadership team.  Leadership team agrees to sustainability roles.  GHS is also involved in this.

5.    Hydrogeologists hired by CRS visit and test sites for ground water aquifers.  If not present, there can be no borehole.

6.    Drilling contractors must apply to CRS for the jobs- based on cost and timing - another process that is transparent.

7.    Well is drilled and water tested.  Water must meet WHO criteria for safe drinking water.  This is not always successful.

8.    WAN summer delegations visit 2 - 3 sites to celebrate the clean water and the village’s ownership of their well.

This process is in months, not days and weeks.
