The Clean Waters; Healthy Futures project successfully enhanced access to safe and reliable water across the four health facilities supported under the WAN grant. Collectively, these facilities serve an estimated catchment population of approximately 85,000 people, with Jomorogo Health Center having the largest catchment of 25,637, and Koro Health Center the smallest at 12,883).
The project’s collaborative approach—bringing together the District Water Officer (DWO), the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), UNHCR, and WASH partners—ensured optimal prioritization of resources. This coordination allowed support to be directed toward facilities with the most urgent water needs while also preventing duplication of efforts and investments.
As part of the planned transition from a humanitarian-led operations and maintenance model to a utility-based system, the project strengthened the capacity of the Yumbe District Hand Pump Mechanics Association through provision of toolkits. This strategic investment will enable the association to provide timely technical services whenever maintenance needs arise at the facility level. In doing so, it reinforces the long-term sustainability and functionality of the rehabilitated water systems.
